Coaches

United Soccer Training Academy carefully assembled some of the region's finest coaches to teach players of all ages the skills and tactics needed to compete and become their personal best. Our coaches can pass on their first hand experience and knowledge they received from playing at the highest levels of soccer to every player in our club. We recognize the impact that coaches have on a player's soccer development. But more importantly, a coach's influence can effect how young men and women develop and grow as people. That is why USTA insists on bringing aboard coaches and trainers who demonstrate the highest moral and personal character. Our coaches have a genuine love of kids and understand that they must be patient, and understanding that player development is a "process". USTA will continue to raise the bar on what we expect from our coaches and trainers, as we seek to identify programs to help coaches advance their licenses and education. Anyone desiring to serve as a coach or trainer should submit their resume and application to our Board of Directors. We are proud to introduce to you the lead training personnel at United Soccer Training Academy.

John Sumoski

John Sumoski currently coaches women's soccer at Wilkes University. His 2005 team garnered it's first Freedom Conference Championship in the school's 19 year history. With that championship, the Lady Colonels received an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. In his 4 year tenure at Wilkes, Sumoski has a record of 45-29-5 and has been named Freedom Conference Coach of the Year two times. Prior to Wilkes University, Sumoski spent two years at Central Michigan University as an assistant coach, 2 years as the head coach at Carlow College in Pittsburgh, and 2 years as an assistant coach at Carnegie Mellon University.

John's most distinguished club experience is with Penns Forest F.C. in Pittsburgh where he spent 7 years developing premier level players. His '79 girls team won several tournaments including 3 state championships which qualified them for the Snickers Regional Championships. His '83 boys team was the first team in Pennsylvania West to win the state championship from U12 through U19. Over 95% of his players from both of these teams played collegiate soccer at schools like Lehigh, Gannon, Lafayette, Allegheny, California University of PA, Seton Hill, Duquesne, St. Francis of PA, and West Virginia.

He has an 'A' License and National Youth License through the USSF, and an Advanced National Diploma and Goalkeeper Diploma through the NSCAA. John is an EPYSA Olympic Development Program Staff Coach currently working with the U16 girls. Sumoski played collegiately at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown where he was a regional All-American. He holds the school's season (18) and career (37) scoring records.

Goalkeeping trainer Bob Zanicky began his coaching career in 1993 at The Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) as Women’s Goalkeeping Trainer. During his four year tenure at IUP, Bob reshaped the program developing goalkeepers who became recognized and chosen National All-Americans and Regional All-Americans. Goalkeeper trained by Bob was named to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference First or Second Team. Head coach Brian Lenosky elevated Bob’s status to Assistant Coach in 1995, the year IUP won its first and only State Championship. That same year Kristen Bardes, IUP’s Sophomore Goalkeeper, was named an NCAA Division 2 All American.

Bob returned to the Wyoming Valley in the fall of 2003, where he created a successful Goalkeeping program for Wyoming Valley Soccer Club (WVSC). Bob is no longer affiliated with WVSC, but during the two short years he ran the program, Bob’s goalkeepers were quickly recognized as some of the best in the state. Coach Zanicky’s youth goalkeeper’s have made the Olympic Development State Team, received invitations to the ODP regional Camp and finished in the top 8 in the Nation at the National Goalie Wars.

As a coach, Bob brings a positive influence to his keepers. Not one training session passes without him saying “You have more in you (ability) than you think.” His aggressive approach to goalkeeping includes both physical and mental preparation. “I want my players to work so hard that they take the pitch with complete confidence in their abilities. They know that they have done everything possible to prepare, that such preparation leads to success in all facets of life. I want them to look forward to the time when they have to make the great save. I want them to invite the best from their opponents with nothing but self-belief in their hearts. I never want a player taking the field doubting their ability. If that happens, I have failed them as a trainer, a coach and a mentor. As a youth coach and trainer I’m not just creating soccer players, I am helping mold young men and women in their formative years.”
